Mormoniana - ‘Winter Radiance—Lake Powell’

Sixteen American composers who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints were invited to participate in a collaborative project initiated by Mormon Artists Group, an organization in New York City. The premise was simple: each composer was to select a visual artwork created by an LDS artist and write a piano composition inspired by it. Together the finished compositions form a new, 16-movement concert work for the piano. The resulting score, a celebration of LDS artists and composers, is titled Mormoniana (Mor-mo-ni-a-na). Pianist Grant Johannesen agreed to collaborate on the endeavor. He placed the finished works in sequence and recorded it in the fall of 2003 at the Assembly Hall in Salt Lake City’s Temple Square.

Three Sacred Works

Recorded live in concert at Ricks College (now BYU Idaho) under a grant from the Heritage Series on Tantara Records, LDS composer Gaylen Hatton presents the premier of Apotheosis: A Glorification, with text selected from the writings of Elder Neal A. Maxwell. Rounding out the program is a beautiful cantata based on the hymn "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief" by composer A. Laurence Lyon and Suite on Latter-day Saint Hymns by Crawford Gates. The sound is lovely; the performances heartfelt.

Four American Sonatas for French Horn

Four American Sonatas for French Horn includes the premiere recording of a new sonata by favorite LDS composer Crawford Gates. Laurence Lowe is a "first-call" musician for film score and concert orchestra recording dates, and his talent shines as he plays these four American sonatas. The particularly demanding Gates piece, a stunning artistic achievement by itself, is worth the price of the CD.
